Shirley Ann (Long) Fleck, 85, of Sugar Land, Texas, passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023, at her daughter’s home in Cromwell Township. Shirley spent the day surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her sisters.
Shirley was born in her great-grandmother’s house in Coalmont Nov. 21, 1938, to Russell and Irene (Moffat) Long. She was one of eight children who grew up in their new home across the street on property that had been passed down for generations. Her childhood was spent surrounded by her numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who lived nearby.
For most of her childhood, Shirley had perfect attendance in Sunday school, even when she had to walk alone. She carried that dedication to her Lord and Savior throughout the remainder of her life. For the past 20 years she faithfully read her Bible cover to cover on top of her many devotional books. She took any ailment or setback in life and turned it into a testament of her faith.
On April 18, 1959, she married her soulmate, Eugene M. Fleck. After a brief stint in Cumberland, Maryland, they went to work for the Milton Hershey School, later moving to Franklin County, before settling on Fleck Road in 1969, where she would remain for the next 44 years. Since 2017, she had resided with her daughter Sandra in Sugar Land, Texas.
Shirley was an active member of her church. In the 1970s, together with several local families, they formed Heritage Baptist Church under the direction of Dr. David Larson. For the first seven years of its existence, the church met in the Flecks’ basement until the new church building in Pogue was completed in 1981. For three decades Shirley taught the Elementary Sunday School Class, on top of cleaning the church weekly.
Years later, Shirley was instrumental in bringing the Released Time Bible Program to the community. The program continues at Heritage Baptist. Shirley was also a founding member of the Shirley Home Ladies Auxiliary in the early 1980’s. She later dedicated years to the Orbisonia Rockhill Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, where she faithfully helped cook and serve meals on Sundays after church, her commitment garnered her the Volunteer of Year Award in 1993.
Her husband Eugene passed away in 1990, they were the parents of four children. Mark A. (Renee) of Green Village; Sandra J. Brumbaugh (Troy) of Sugar Land, Texas; and Michael E. (Warren) of Three Springs. Daughter Sherri J. Banks passed away in 2001.
